It isn’t uncommon for dogs to develop allergies.
There are many irritants that your dog could be
allergic to. The first thing to look at would be
the food source. Remember, soy, corn and wheat
are grains that can be the prime suspect in your
dog’s allergies. Certain allergens will cause a
dog to itch and scratch uncontrollably; you may
want to avoid using foods possessing soy. If you
suspect this may be the case; switch to another
food alternative. A few weeks without the
culprit brand of food will reveal the truth.
Dogs allergies build up after exposure to a
certain ingredient within their food. The more
your dog is exposed; it is most likely that the
allergy will become stronger after a certain
amount of time.
Did you know that cats with long hair produce
more allergens than short haired cats? FelD1 is
an allergen found in the anal sacs of cats and
their saliva. What is the number one thing cats
love to do? Clean themselves! When cats lick
themselves, saliva dries upon contact with air,
flakes off and is left floating around the home,
infecting your dog. These flakes are sticky and
adhere to curtains, carpets, walls, furniture;
practically anything in the home. This allergen
can survive within the home for up to ten years.
It is a very difficult allergen to get rid of.
It would appear that dogs allergies no different
from human allergies.
If your cat is indeed the problem to your dogs
allergies; be sure to bathe them once per week,
or however often your cat can tolerate it. Just
because cats clean themselves, does not
necessarily mean they are clean. They just
become one big allergen magnet when not properly
bathed. There are other possibilities that can
create your dogs allergies.
Believe it or not, dogs allergies can be traced
to people. Humans exude allergens, just as
canines and cats. Our skin has the ability to
flake off 24 hours per day. Other possibilities
to investigate would be detergents we use in
clothing, and our perfumes. Dogs allergies can
be caused by ingredients in clothing detergents
and the powder we sprinkle on carpets to freshen
them.
Dogs who roam frequently outdoors introduce
pollen and other allergens into the home. It
cannot be stressed enough to properly bath
animals. In turn, these allergens brought from
the outside can affect the entire household.
Also; closely examine any other pets you have in
the house. Birds, gerbils, rabbits and pet mice
have the ability to through off allergens as
well as people. There are many roads that can
lead to dogs allergies. Sometimes it is hard to
pinpoint exactly what the cause could be.
Summertime is fun time; and the result of
insects! Oh yes, your dogs allergies most
certainly can be caused those pesky mosquitoes
and fleas! When a dog is bitten; saliva from the
pest is injected deep into the
skin; causing
itchiness and inflammation. Visits to the vet
can bring fast relief. You probably will be
prescribed powders or sprays to ease dogs
allergies these pests lay upon your canine.
Another wonderful bit of information is to use a permethrin fogger in front and back yards. If
you have a cat; use sparingly as permethrin can
kill cats. Keeping grass cut short and spraying
in shady areas will stamp out the pests and
hopefully your dogs allergies.
In some instances, Benadryl is always effective
and not expensive as some may think. Tavist is
another wonderful relief medication for your
dogs allergies. Atarax is an antihistamine that
can be given to relieve your dogs allergies as
well.
