Dogs Allergies

It isn’t uncommon for dogs to develop allergies. There are many irritants that your dog could be allergic to. The first thing to look at would be the food source. Remember, soy, corn and wheat are grains that can be the prime suspect in your dog’s allergies. Certain allergens will cause a dog to itch and scratch uncontrollably; you may want to avoid using foods possessing soy. If you suspect this may be the case; switch to another food alternative. A few weeks without the culprit brand of food will reveal the truth. Dogs allergies build up after exposure to a certain ingredient within their food. The more your dog is exposed; it is most likely that the allergy will become stronger after a certain amount of time.

Did you know that cats with long hair produce more allergens than short haired cats? FelD1 is an allergen found in the anal sacs of cats and their saliva. What is the number one thing cats love to do? Clean themselves! When cats lick themselves, saliva dries upon contact with air, flakes off and is left floating around the home, infecting your dog. These flakes are sticky and adhere to curtains, carpets, walls, furniture; practically anything in the home. This allergen can survive within the home for up to ten years. It is a very difficult allergen to get rid of. It would appear that dogs allergies no different from human allergies.

If your cat is indeed the problem to your dogs allergies; be sure to bathe them once per week, or however often your cat can tolerate it. Just because cats clean themselves, does not necessarily mean they are clean. They just become one big allergen magnet when not properly bathed. There are other possibilities that can create your dogs allergies.

Believe it or not, dogs allergies can be traced to people. Humans exude allergens, just as canines and cats. Our skin has the ability to flake off 24 hours per day. Other possibilities to investigate would be detergents we use in clothing, and our perfumes. Dogs allergies can be caused by ingredients in clothing detergents and the powder we sprinkle on carpets to freshen them.

Dogs who roam frequently outdoors introduce pollen and other allergens into the home. It cannot be stressed enough to properly bath animals. In turn, these allergens brought from the outside can affect the entire household. Also; closely examine any other pets you have in the house. Birds, gerbils, rabbits and pet mice have the ability to through off allergens as well as people. There are many roads that can lead to dogs allergies. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint exactly what the cause could be.

Summertime is fun time; and the result of insects! Oh yes, your dogs allergies most certainly can be caused those pesky mosquitoes and fleas! When a dog is bitten; saliva from the pest is injected deep into the skin; causing itchiness and inflammation. Visits to the vet can bring fast relief. You probably will be prescribed powders or sprays to ease dogs allergies these pests lay upon your canine. Another wonderful bit of information is to use a permethrin fogger in front and back yards. If you have a cat; use sparingly as permethrin can kill cats. Keeping grass cut short and spraying in shady areas will stamp out the pests and hopefully your dogs allergies.

In some instances, Benadryl is always effective and not expensive as some may think. Tavist is another wonderful relief medication for your dogs allergies. Atarax is an antihistamine that can be given to relieve your dogs allergies as well.
